⏵ character information
name: william kaplan/billy maximoff (it's complicated)
canon: marvel cinematic universe
age: sixteen
canon point: episode 6: familiar by thy side
history: Billy @ MCU Wikia
abilities:
William Kaplan is Billy Maximoff. He has already began to show the same powers as the younger Billy although to a more muted degree (because he needs to accept his own identity). It should be noted until either A) a canon update or B) he comes to his own conclusion of his identity his abilities outside of witchcraft and telepathy rarely show themselves and have only done so in an angry outburst. So he will not have consistent access to them without development.

There are some powers that are already currently in play/showing themselves, but because the reveal is from a later canon point I am putting them at the bottom and am happy to pretend they don't exist until a canon update but because they're "active" currently didn't want to misrepresent something. Billy is a being made of chaos magic and has the capacity for spontaneous creation that can be subconscious. He's also capable of witchcraft. All of this breaks down to:

Telepathy: The ability to read people's minds. A younger Billy could hear the thoughts of a wide portion of a town and was seen to able to read from a several miles distance both the thoughts and visions of what targets show. At his current capability, William is most in-tune with those he is close to or those feeling intense emotion. The more intense another person feels, the louder it is for him. This ability will only be used with permission in an example permisisons post.

Mental Control: William has displayed the capability of being able to control the mind of others and while it was only two people it was also centuries old witches, showing at least that his capacity to do so is quite strong. A younger Billy was able to paralyze a squadron of soldiers so his brother could steal soldier's guns with this ability. At the current time, this has only ever been used accidentally. Like telepathy it will only be used with permission.

Telekinesis: He is able to control and manipulate objects with his mind - as a teenager this was only recent and in the form of throwing two grown adults. As a child this was shown as the ability to stop his older brother from moving at the speed of sound instantly and stopping a bullet from landing.

Witchcraft: For the past three years, William has extensively studied witchcraft. While he is ultimately a novice in the practical use of it he is well-versed in the study of spells, runes, potions, lore/history, and theory of the MCU's version of witchcraft/Wiccan studies. Any spell he's tried casting in this manner has been successful, even if underpractice.

Item Alteration: Seen very minimally and only capable subconsciously: William is able to change the look and feel of something. Currently only seen in clothing, after he is stabbed on the Road, William's hoodie begins to change from blue to red as the chaos magic becomes more prominent in his blood (it signifies his becoming who he is/accepting his identity over time).

Finally,
Chaos Magic: Or the Part that can become spoilers
Reality Warping: Hinted at throughout the series from Agatha's nods and commentary (it suits you, none of this would have been so dramatic) and decor coming from William's room (all details up until this point): Billy subconsciously created the Road that Agatha's coven walked on. This shows that he has the ability to create false reality/illusions with their own rules and settings that
must be followed. As this is a baby ability it is not an expansive world, changes on the whims/ideas given to it, and is entirely subconscious he would not be able to reproduce it (and the actual act of reality warping isn't something I'm interested in!).

It does show that he is capable of conjuring (creating items from nothing), small area/reality changes (for rp's sakes at maximum), and can fully change the outfits/appearances he wills on the fly.

personality: William Kaplan is Billy Maximoff, but he's also William Kaplan and he's not sure how to put those two pieces together.

In explanation, three years ago when Wanda Maximoff released her spell on the residents of Westview one of her sons managed to escape his should be demise. At the near exact moment of the Westview anomaly's disappearance, a young William Kaplan was killed in a car crash. Billy found himself in his body with no idea who he was or what was going on: Only that this wasn't (his) body and somewhere Tommy is out there. General amnesia and body dysphoria horrors withstanding, Billy had the added pressure of his "new parents" worrying about their son's near death (or actual death) experience and his now sudden amnesia and personality changes. Quite literally, as he heard them in his mind with all of their worries and fears. So he naturally did the one thing he thought he could to protect himself and them:

Became William Kaplan even though he felt it was wrong, even though he knew he was not William Kaplan. Not in the beginning and never ever fully.

See there are two sides to Billy. The first and most prominently displayed is William. William is a very social, polite, and kind boy - if a little sassy. Having grown up in a loving, well-adjusted family to spite all of the MCU's shenanigans, William is the very picture of a boy who is loved and accepted. His parents adore his boyfriend and make sure he feels welcomed in their home. They happily give their son space and means to express himself, even if that expression comes to a lot of magickal paraphernalia in a Jewish household. William does truly love his parents and think of them solidly as his parents.

Because of this his "William," is also a big part of his identity - the only identity he had until very recently - but he's always known something was wrong and has searched for that. A key part of Billy's personality is an investigative nature. He's researched magick for as long as he's been back. He's put together entire dossiers on who he might be and been down enough Reddit conspiracy rabbit holes you might question his sanity a little bit. This nature is a desire to know, to see for himself, and to understand. While it is largely about his own identity it does extended to Wiccan culture and themes as he questions why traditions have changed and why some things aren't embraced.

Billy is the darker side of William. This is the side who's willing to be a little more manipulative and lie to get his way. After all, if you asked him, he's been lying to his parents about who he is. This is the one who lies about his desires for the Road and hides his own knowledge, even if it's not entirely malicious. It's the part of him that hides so they he can survive, because three years of living and feeling other's intense emotions has taught him the quickest way to quiet the voices in his own mind is to comply to their own needs.

But as with all things, it's a little more complex than a clear cut "this is William," "this is Billy". William's journey on the Road is two-fold: to find his brother but to also find himself. In doing so we learn other things: Billy is wishful if not quite optimistic. He's willing to believe he can and will do something if, even if those actions lead to unquestionably reckless things like meeting strange men in dark garages and breaking into a witch's house the same night without telling a single adult what he's doing. He's empathetic and kind, quick to come to the defense of others and unwilling (or unable) to turn away from a truly honest feeling. He's a fanboy about all things magick and truly enjoys learning about it even when the conditions are dangerous (but not deadly).

Ultimately, William Kaplan is a liar. He lies by pretending he's someone he's not to protect the hearts of himself and his parents... and up until now, it's worked, because other than a feeling he's never had a name to put with it. But the thing is, who he is now is William Kaplan: all of it. He just has to figure that out for himself that he can be both William Kaplan and Billy Maximoff. At the current moment, however, he's still wavering between the two. He still feels he has to be an act more than he can be Billy, but neither are that different. Both are two fanboy magick lovers who can't help but cry when someone else does who finds the important things in their life to be family.
